Van Insurance
Top quality cover for your work van
Why do I need Van Insurance?
It is illegal for anyone to drive a vehicle on the road without adequate insurance. Van insurance is specially designed to protect you against legal costs if you’re in an accident and injure either yourself or someone else. It also covers you for any damage to another person’s vehicle or property, and if you have fully comprehensive insurance it covers your own van too.
Driving without proper van insurance means likely receiving a hefty fine, prosecution or even a ban. In the event of an accident, it would also mean you’d need to pay for damage, legal fees and compensation yourself which is likely to run into thousands. It’s not worth the risk.
What types of Van Insurance are there?
Generally speaking there are four main types of van insurance available to van drivers in the UK. There are different levels of protection depending on what you choose and the insurance company you decide to go with.
The four main types of van insurance policies are:
Telematics
Telematics works by having a black box installed into your van. The premium is then decided based on your driving as the information from the black box is fed back to the insurance company. Black boxes record things like any hard braking or emergency stops, speed, distance travelled and what time of day or night you tend to be on the road.
Not all insurers currently offer telematics van insurance products but many do. If this is something you’re interested in, get in touch with us at Real so we can help.
Third party only
This is the minimum level of cover that must have to drive your van legally. If you have an accident, it covers your liability for any injury of the other driver of any of their passengers, damage to someone else’s property and liability if you’re towing a trailer or caravan. However it does not cover any damage to your own vehicle.
Third party; fire and theft
This offers the same protection as third party only but also covers fire damage, the theft of your vehicle and damage to your van sustained during the course of the theft.
Fully comprehensive
The highest level of cover you can get, fully comprehensive insurance covers theft, fire or accidental damage to your van. It also protects against claims made against you for damage to another vehicle if you’re deemed at fault in an accident, or for injuries to the other driver or passengers.
What isn’t covered?
Most policies do not cover damage caused by your van’s lack of maintenance or by putting in the wrong fuel. You will also not be covered if your van is stolen whilst it’s unattended but the keys are still in it.
