Bodyshop Insurance

Specialist cover arranged for members of the car trade

Why do I need bodyshop insurance for my business?

If you own or manage a car body shop and repair business, it’s likely that you will need to be able to drive customers vehicles to and from the premises – which naturally you need insurance in place for. In addition, you’ll have a range of specialist tools and possibly dedicated premises to protect. In a nutshell, you need an insurance policy that reflects your particular business requirements and bodyshop insurance typically covers vehicles in your possession, your business assets and its liabilities.

What is Bodyshop Insurance?

Bodyshop insurance is a broad term. In fact, when working with an insurance broker like Real Insurance, we can help you identify and understand the risks that your particular business faces and make sure you have adequate protection in place, while also avoiding paying for cover that you may not need. There are typically three main areas for consideration:

Road risk insurance for bodyshops

‘Road risk’ insurance cover is likely to be required in order that you can drive your customers vehicles. Levels of cover vary – Third party only, third party fire and theft and comprehensive. We would always advocate comprehensive cover and this has the added benefit that you can include your own vehicles on the policy.

Liability insurance for bodyshops

Where you have anyone working for you – even if just part time or casually, it’s a legal requirement to have employers liability insurance in place. Public liability covers you against claims made by members of the public that they have suffered a loss or been injured as a result of your business activity. While it’s not compulsory, if you come into contact with members of the public (and that could just mean them coming to your premises to collect a vehicle) then you should think hard about the risks the business faces.

Property and contents insurance for bodyshops

If you work from your own business premises, it’s likely that you’ll want to protect the building itself as well as any contents. Indeed, if the property is mortgaged, it will almost certainly be a condition of your mortgage that you have buildings insurance in place. You will also have a range of specialist equipment, from alignment tools and panel beating equipment through to sanders and spray guns and mixing machines. All of these items can be covered, and where a bodyshop does have its own premises and contents and needs to cover these alongside liability and road risks, a motor trade combined policy may be the best option.

What is typically covered by a Bodyshop Insurance policy?

A bodyshop insurance policy can vary highly from insurer to insurer, and even between one business and another using the same insurer.

Almost all bodyshop insurance policies would include basic business or traders protections, but they might include any or all of the following, depending on the exact needs of your shop:

  • Road risk cover – this protects you when driving a customer’s vehicle for work purposes.

  • Employers and public liability covers – These will pay out if your business is found to be liable for any injury or loss suffered by one of your employees or a member of the public. They can also protect you from the costs associated with legal defence against a claim.

  • Premises cover – This will protect the building itself (if you own it). If you do rent the facility you work from, there are also protections that cover ‘tenants improvements’ which you may have carried out.

  • Tool cover – You know how much of your investment your tools and equipment are! This will reimburse you (or possibly replace them) should they be harmed or stolen in a covered event.

  • Machinery and plants cover – This would cover a lot of things which are not considered ‘portable hand tools’, such as spray booths, paint ovens, etc.

There are various other protections available as optional extras. Bodyshop insurance really can be tailored to your particular business requirements. We’d be happy to discuss your needs and get you a range of quotes today!
