Who needs Security Guard Insurance?

Being a security guard insurance is right up there on the main priorities of protections for your business, whether you are just a single self-employed professional or you run one or more teams of static or mobile security guards.

As a security guard you could be providing your services to a multitude of locations, patrolling building sites, unoccupied premises or sites with high value products. Throughout the warmer months there are many festivals and events taking place that need your services.

Whilst protecting businesses or people you can be exposed to a wide range of risks, a security guard insurance policy is typically made up of a number of covers that can be tailored to suit your specific requirements.

What cover can be included on a security guard insurance policy?

Whilst there can be many types of insurance cover that would suit a security guard business, these can range between the essential covers such as Public Liability Insurance and when you employee people you must have Employers Liability insurance in place, it’s a statutory requirement which means it must be in place even when the people you have are self-employed.

At Real Insurance Brokers, we work closely with all of our clients to better understand their business needs before providing quotes. We work in partnership with a number of specialist insurers that provide a range of covers under one policy to ensure you have the right protections in place.

There are a number of cover types that are likely to be required within a security guard insurance policy. The key considerations can include:

Security guard public liability insurance

Public liability cover is usually right at the top of the list of priorities for security guards. You’re dealing with members of the public all the time, this could be whilst protecting property or trying to keep groups of people under control at a festival. Public Liability insurance can protect you from not only the legal defence costs in the event that a member of the public alleges that they have suffered a loss, or suffered injury or illness as a result of your work but also any compensation that may have to be paid, should you or your business have been found to be negligent.

Security guard employer’s liability insurance

If you have people working for you, even if only part time or casually or even people that are self-employed, you are legally obliged to have employers liability insurance in place. It could be you run a security guard business with a mix of permanent and part time staff, but by law you must have employer’s liability insurance in place. As with public liability, it will protect the business should a member of staff become unwell, suffer an injury or loss as a result of their work with you. Just like Public Liability, the legal costs involved can be substantial; the cover can protect you from these legal costs and expenses as well as the compensation costs.

What Public Liability Limit can I have as a Security Guard?

Limits on Public Liability Insurance can vary, they are usually referred to a “limit of indemnity” whilst we would usually recommend a minimum of £2m or £5m a lower limit is available such a £1million.

A security Guard Insurance policy can have wide covers that are either built in or as an optional cover. An example of these covers is:

  • Public & Products Liability – £5million as standard, £1million or £2million option

  • Employers Liability – £10million as standard

  • Efficacy/Contractual Liability

  • Loss of Keys

  • Wrongful Arrest

  • Financial Loss

  • Professional Indemnity

  • Legal Expenses

What Other insurance is available for security guards?

When taking out static or mobile security guard insurance, there are a number of other considerations to be potentially made.

Your business may use security guard dogs, in which case you might need to think about anything that your dog might do such as bite someone, it’s essential that the insurance cover you take out also extends to cover your liability for the actions of the dog.

Sometimes a security business might need to operate specialist equipment, CCTV for instance as well as surveillance equipment for monitoring property of crowds allowing you to mobilise your guards to the most effective locations.

With many operations being run remotely this can mean that there is a significant amount of expensive technology located both at the monitoring point as well as on the ground to. When you are working from your own premises it’s essential that not only is the equipment itself covered but the property that you are working from too.

It might be that you operate your business from commercial premises, in which case buildings and contents cover may be required. A Package Insurance policy is likely to cover some of the essential areas of your business, if you have a loss at your premises, business interruption insurance will keep you in business should you not be able to work from your premises should the worst happen.

Working from Home – sometimes a security guard might run their business from home, Home Office Insurance will be able to cover the essential business machinery.

Accident and Sickness Insurance – unfortunately anyone can be involved in an accident or become ill, if you can’t work then it can become difficult to stay ahead financially and this is where cover providing an income whilst you are ill can be essential.

Motor Insurance – Getting you or your employees to site
